SSM Dapati Skim Pelaburan Secara Pawah Ikan Arowana Tidak Sah

Sarawak Plans To Set Up Arowana Rescue Centre

KUCHING, June 14 (Bernama) -- Sarawak plans to set up a rescue centre here for the Arowana aquarium fish seized from the illegal trade.Sarawak Forestry Corporation chief park warden Wilfred Landong said the centre would be set up at the Sama Jaya Forest Park, one of the oldest protected areas in the state established in 1950.
.
Initially, a small pond and a few aquariums would be set up at the centre which would be developed into an integrated farm complete with an Arowana hatchery, he said.
.
"Eventually, it will become one of the tourism products of the Sama Jaya Forest Park," he told reporters after the official launch of the Sama Jaya Forest Park Rehabilitation Programme by Sarawak Forestry Corporation managing director Datuk Len Talif Salleh Monday.
.
The Sama Jaya Forest Park is the first urban forestry project undertaken by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation to promote multiple uses of forests by encouraging outdoor recreation, nature conservation education and nature-based tourism.
.
Landong, who is also general manager of Sarawak Forestry Protected Areas and Biodiversity Conservation, said the idea to set up the rescue centre came up when Sarawak was reported to be the transit point for the illegal trade in Arowana from neighbouring countries to China, Taiwan and Singapore."We are very concerned by this as it will give Sarawak a bad name," he said.
.
Earlier, Len described the illegal trade in Arowana as "not that serious" and said the setting up of the Arowana rescue centre did not mean that the illegal trade in the fish was getting out of hand."We are taking proactive action before it becomes more serious," he said.
.
The Arowana, a freshwater fish of the family of Osteoglossidae, is sought after, especially in China, Singapore and Japan, not only because it is rare, beautiful and graceful but also because it is a status symbol and believed, by the Chinese, to bring business luck and prosperity.
.
The Arowana is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and classified as a species threatened with extinction.
